Jiro Manio sets limits to gay roles

JIRO MANIO, the former child actor who dazzled audience with his performance in 'Magnifico' some years back, is now all of 16, a high school senior in Mandaluyong.

After having played best friend to the lead character in 'Ang Lihim ni Antonio,' Jiro says he cannot for the life of him, see himself playing a gay role the way Kenjie Garcia did it as 'Antonio.' Maybe not now, maybe never. The farthest he would go to in a gay role would be in a comedy, such as the ones he did in two installments of 'Manay Po.'

Jiro's proud of his work in 'Tambolista,' the story of two brothers hoping to get out of poverty. Sid Lucero and Coco Martin are among his co-actors here.

The film, directed by Adolf Alix, Jr., has been shown in a few film festivals abroad and will have a public screening at Sine Indie of Robinsons Galleria starting on Aug. 27.

By the way, Jiro announced during a lunch encounter last week he's a closet chef. Cooking truly fascinates him that he wants to take up Culinary Arts after graduating from high school.

'I enjoy cooking, sobra!,' he said as he pointed at some beef and chicken dishes prepared exquisitely by the great chefs at 9501 within the ABS-CBN premises in Quezon City. 'I can cook those,' he stated with confidence.
