ABS-CBN executives express sadness over death of Gilbert Perez
A few days ago, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was informed that a Malaysian actress named Louisa Chong arrived in the Philippines to shoot for the upcoming ABS-CBN show A Time For Us. According to the source, "Si Direk Jerry Sineneng muna ang magdidirek ng teleserye habang nagpapagaling pa si Direk Gilbert Perez."
But last night, July 16, Direk Gilbert was unable to recover from his second heart attack.
Here is the official statement of ABS-CBN regarding the death of the director:
"Veteran TV and film director Gilbert Perez, fondly called "Manong" by showbiz folks, passed away at 10:41 Wednesday evening at St Luke's Medical Center. He was 48 years old.
"Manong suffered a heart attack last July 1, while directing a scene for the upcoming teleserye A Time for Us, starring Jericho Rosales and Malaysian star Carmen Soo.
"Manong was the former executive producer of television show Ready, Get Set, Go, and has directed some episodes of the country's longest-running drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya. He also directed movies for Star Cinema like Dreamboy with Bea Alonzo and Piolo Pascual."
"We will miss a very caring and loyal friend," says ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio. "Manong is a passionate and creative person. He is a perfectionist and expects people working with him to match his drive for passion, creativity and perfection.
"Manong and I both started fom Ateneo de Manila and met up again with him in BBC-2 when I was doing my OJT," relates ABS-CBN SVP and TV Production Head Cory Vidanes. "He was my mentor, taught me a lot and really took care of me when I was just starting in the business."
The well-loved director is considered a member of Cory's family having grown close to Cory's mother. Manong died on the same day that the mother of the ABS-CBN executive died.
Manong's remains lie in state at the Felicidad Room of Arlington Memorial Chapel, 12 G. Araneta Avenue, Quezon City.
